Changing Colours. A cube inspired by the dramatic colour of the salmon

Salmon change from being bright red, to stripy, to silver, during the different stages of its life. Colour helps the salmon camouflage into its environment and helps it to survive.

This cube celebrates the vibrant colour of salmon and invites the viewer to interact and alter the colour of the cube, similar to that of a Rubik’s cube. The cube is made from a series of metal turning panels coloured on both sides. Colour is key to the survival of the salmon helping it hunt as well as protecting itself when being hunted!

Light Salmon Pink is a light pink colour that resembles the colour salmon. The name is derived from the flesh colour of the pink salmon. The nutrient that imparts the pink flesh colour is astaxanthin, which salmon ingest when they feed on other marine organisms, such as krill and small shrimp. It has become a running joke that when a male wears clothing that is pale pink (usually bought by a female loved one) to emphatically insist, "It's not pink, it's salmon!"
