Reflection. A cube inspired by the Myths and Legends associated with the salmon

Salmon is known as the provider of life, he is a symbol of abundance and prosperity.

‘Reflection’ celebrates the wealth of history and cultural meaning of salmon throughout the world. Many myths and ledgends exist around the subject of salmon, at the Civic Centre in Newcastle upon Tyne there is a statue of the Tyne God, Condatis. He was associated with the confluences of rivers, in particular the Tyne and the Tees his name means ‘waters meet’.

The cube itself is designed to reflect, it is made from angled strips of polished steel that capture the light and distort the reflection of the landscape.

According to Nootka legend, Salmon were people before they were transformed into fish. As fish, they look forward to fulfilling their duty as food for earth people, part of the sacred cycle of life. Many cultures shared a dependence on Salmon for survival and a profound relationship with the cycles of the natural world. All celebrated the sacred fish, many with "First Fish" ceremonies to welcome the Salmon home each year and give thanks for the life they provided.
