Wellies. A cube inspired by the people of the North East

The Wellington boot, also known as a 'wellie', was worn and popularised by Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington and was fashionable among the British aristocracy in the early 19th century.

The people of the North East donated many wellies used for this sculpture after appeals in The Journal and on Radio Newcastle. www.wellieboots.com also kindly donated several boxes full of colourful wellies to add to the mix.

Green Wellingtons are traditionally popular in Britain, black Wellingtons with red or green soles remain a favourite of Canadians and yellow-soled black Wellingtons are often seen in the USA, in addition to Canadian styles.
