History/Introduction

Hexham is the centre and main market town for Tynedale, it has a beautiful and historic face, which contrasts with its modern shopping, arts and leisure facilities. At its heart are the historic Abbey and the Market Place.

All around this historic centre are excellent shops, parks and gardens, including Tyne Green Country Park beside the river. The town is an excellent place to browse and pick up unusual items. The award-winning Queen's Hall Arts Centre presents a full and varied programme throughout the year - from dance to drama, all types of music and a wide range of exhibitions.

The town has a wealth of antiques and curious shops as well as places to eat, all in interesting medieval streets, which surround the historic market place. Market day is Tuesday, and Farmer's Markets are held every second and fourth Saturday of the month.

Hexham is proud to have been named by Country Life magazine as England's favourite Market town, and also won a double accolade in Britain In Bloom 2005, being judged the national winner in both the Town and Tourism categories.
