Quayside.

History/Introduction

Newcastle quayside has evolved with the history of the city. Coal, water, crossing the river and various other events have shaped the Quayside into what we see today.

Long before mining and industry brought the Quayside to life, an encampment grew around The River Tyne. The area became one of the most important frontier towns near the border with Scotland.

From the mid to late eighties, an era of regeneration began on the Newcastle Quayside. Waterside property again became fashionable and the shift in business away from the banks of the Tyne 130 years earlier meant that much of the Quayside was ripe for development.

The future looks bright for both sides of the river with new developments in business, housing and leisure services constantly evolving.

The Quayside was home to the TYNE SALMON TRAIL during the summer months of 2008, they appeared outside The Baltic in June and also on the Newcastle bank lining the length of the River Tyne for all of August.
